MEDFORD – In front of a packed house at Tufts University's Cousens Gymnasium, the #6 Amherst College Lord Jeffs proved to be a little too much for the Tufts University Jumbos, 74-65, in NESCAC men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
Amherst goes to 20-2 and remains undefeated in conference at 8-0. The Jumbos fall to 16-6 overall and 6-3 in the NESCAC and will be on the road next Friday at Hamilton for an 8 pm contest.
The largest lead of the first half for either team was four points as the action went back-and-forth. There were eight ties and eight lead changes through the first 20 minutes.
The Jumbos held a 26-22 advantage with 6:16 to play in the half after a layup from junior Scott Anderson (Sudbury, MA). Amherst closed the gap to one at halftime, 36-35, on a pair of free throws from junior Allen Williamson (Saugus, MA).
Freshman C.J. Moss (Westport, MA) led Tufts in the first half with 10 points on 4 for 7 shooting while Amherst senior David Waller (Tampa, FL) netted 13 first-half points.
The Lord Jeffs took control to begin the second half, building a five-point lead with 13:07 to go, 49-44. Junior Willy Workman (Northampton, MA) had five points to lead Amherst during the stretch.
A thunderous dunk by Tufts senior Alex Orchowski (Cornwall, NY) brought the Jumbos within one, 45-44. Amherst pushed back ahead to a seven-point advantage, 56-49, after a three-pointer by sophomore Aaron Toomey (Greensboro, NC) and a dunk from Williamson.
The Jumbos got back to within three at 62-59 with 4:25 to play after a jumper by sophomore Kwame Firempong (Inglewood, CA), but the Lord Jeffs then reeled off five consecutive points to go up by eight. Amherst hit nine of its last 11 free throws to seal the victory.
Freshman Ben Ferris (Essex Junction, VT) led the Jumbos with 16 points on 7 for 11 shooting including 2 for 3 from long range. He added 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Three others scored in double figures for Tufts: Moss (12), Orchowski (11) and Anderson (10).
Toomey had a game-high 18 points, going 6 for 7 at the charity stripe. Waller finished with 15 points for the Lord Jeffs on 6 for 11 from the field. Workman and Williams chipped in with 10 apiece.
Tufts shot 46.4 percent (26/56) from the field while Amherst was at 40.6 percent (26/64). Twelve offensive rebounds for Amherst in the second half led to nine second-chance points.
