GREENSBORO, NC – The Tufts baseball team scored 11 runs in the first inning and finished with 27 hits while continuing an early-season offensive explosion in a 24-6 victory at Guilford College on Monday.
The Jumbos (3-0) scored an 18-4 win at Washington and Lee University Sunday and picked right up where they left off in Monday's tilt. With one out in the first, Tufts had 14 consecutive batters reach base safely without benefit of an error. The Jumbos had eight of their 27 hits in the first inning, which, combined with four walks and two hit batsmen, resulted in an 11-run frame. Junior RF Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) and sophomore 2B Tim Mitropoulos (Winchester, MA) both hit two-run singles in the first and freshman 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) smacked a two-run double.
Guilford (12-11) used three pitchers in the first inning and six for the game. The Quakers struggled with their control and combined for five walks, seven hit batsmen, three wild pitches and two balks.
Freshman 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) and freshman CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) were among six Jumbos with three or more hits. Mitropoulos had three hits and scored four times. Senior SS Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) doubled among his three hits and scored three runs. Freshman catcher Bryan Egan (Watervliet, NY) and junior 1B Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) also had three hits. Sophomore RF Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) belted a solo home run in the fifth, his second in three games, one of Tufts' seven extra-base hits.
The Jumbos also had an eight-run sixth inning. Three games into 2012, Tufts has scored 51 runs for an average of 17 per game. They have 57 hits and a .422 team batting average.
Senior southpaw Kevin Gilchrist (Medford, MA) benefitted from the offensive outburst to pick up his first win of 2012. He scattered nine hits and three runs over six innings, walked one and fanned four.
Guilford's Kent Peterson went 2 for 2 with two rbi. Danny Ditota and Justin Pittman also had two hits and Herc Ingels hit a two-run double in the Quakers' three-run ninth inning.
Tufts plays twice on Tuesday. In the afternoon, they are at Averett for a 1:30 pm start. At night, they have a 7 pm start at Greensboro College. Guilford hosts Frostburg State University Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
