HAMPTON, VA - The visiting Tufts Jumbos scored three runs in the first inning of each game in Saturday's doubleheader to sweep the Apprentice School 8-5 and 8-2 at War Memorial Stadium. Coach John Casey's team is now 6-3 on its spring trip.
In game one, the Jumbos broke open with RBI singles from Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) and James Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) to go with a run scoring on a double play to take the early 3-0 lead. Apprentice School answered with a run in its half of the first as Andrew Hooper scored Trevin Wilson on an infield single.
The visitors gained a run in the second on a Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) sacrifice fly and then pushed four across in the fourth on a two-run double from Erik Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) and a two-run single from Howard.
Apprentice School (15-11) chipped away with a pair of runs in the fifth on a Devorn Lake two-run single to score Chris Aldridge and Chris Scarola who earlier singled. In the seventh, the Builders made things interesting with a two-run single from Travis Franklin plating Aldridge and Wilson, but could get no closer.
Lake was 3 for 4, while Wilson, Aldridge and Andrew Hooper had a pair of hits each for the Builders as Chris Perry took the loss. Howard was 3 for 3 with three RBIs for the Jumbos as Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) took the win and Willie Archibald (Milton, MA) earned the save.
In game two, Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) drove in two of the three runs to start the game for Tufts with a double as they raced out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Weikert hit a solo home run with one out in the third.
Apprentice School pushed its runs across in the sixth as Lake smashed a two-run home run to left. The Jumbos responded with a three-spot in the top of the seventh to finish with the win 8-2.
Ryan Hendrickson was 2 for 3 to lead the Builders as Daniel Lutz took the loss. Collins and Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) had a pair of hits each to lead Tufts (6-3) to give Dean Lambert (Cross River, NY) the win. Archibald earned his second save of the day.
Apprentice School returns to action on Tuesday hosting NCAA Division II Virginia State University at 2 pm for a single game. Junior 2B Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) had an rbi doubles and Collins drove home another run with a single.
