Freshman 3B Wade Hauser finished the spring trip with 16 rbi

NORFOLK, VA – The Tufts baseball team finished its spring trip in appropriate fashion, pounding out 17 hits in an 18-3 victory at Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon. The Jumbos scored 10 runs in the third inning and five more in the fifth to pave the way.
Ten Jumbos reached base safely before an out was recorded in the third. Senior DH Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) hit a two-run double in the inning. Freshman 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) had an rbi single and knocked in another run with a fielder's choice. Junior 2B Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) scored twice.
In the fifth, sophomore LF Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) singled home a run and scored, while freshman catcher Nick Barker (Weymouth, MA) hit a two-run single. Hauser would later triple home a run and score in the Jumbos' two-run sixth.
Freshman starter Kyle Slinger (Danville, CA) was the beneficiary of the run support. He went five innings allowing eight hits and three runs, striking out seven and walking one. He improved his record to 2-0. VWC scored a single run in the second on a triple by Billy Crowe. Nathan Chamberlain and Josh Miller then had run-scoring singles in the third.
Hauser (3 for 4, three runs, three rbi) and Barker (3 for 6, three rbi, run) led the Jumbo assault. Senior SS Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) finished 2 for 5 with two rbi and a run, while Collins went 2 for 4 with two runs and two rbi. Junior 1B Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) scored three times.
Senior Jake Crawford (Boise, ID) pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Tufts, allowing two hits. Freshman Joe Harrington (Burke, VA) set the Marlins down 1-2-3 in his one inning of relief.
Pike Brynildse was 3 for 4 at the top of the VWC order. Alex Lambert finished 2 for 4 with a run. The Marlins used nine pitchers, with all but one giving up at least a run.
The Jumbos, who averaged 11.2 runs and 14.2 hits per game on the trip, begin their New England schedule on Wednesday at Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
