BUZZARDS BAY, MA - Freshman Bryan Egan (Watervliet, NY) rapped out four hits and drove in four runs to lead Tufts to a 17-0 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.
The visiting Jumbos (8-3), who received votes in this week's NCBWA D3Baseball.com national poll, plated all of the runs they would need in their first at-bat, taking advantage of a two-out error and jumping out to a 4-0 cushion on RBI singles by junior Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) and sophomore Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) that were followed by a two-run single by Egan, who added a third-inning RBI safety to extend Tufts' lead to 5-0.
The visitors added 10 runs in the middle innings, batting around in the fifth as part of a five-run rally, and the Jumbos closed out their scoring with a pair of ninth-inning runs on Egan's fourth hit of the day as well as senior Sam Sager's (Cranston, RI) RBI single, his fifth hit of the afternoon.
Sager ripped three doubles on the day for Tufts, which also received four hits and two RBI from Izzo to go with three hits and three RBI from Weikert as part of a 22-hit attack. Junior Billy Collins (Hanson, MA) added three hits for the Jumbos, who also received two hits off the bat of junior Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY). Sophomore Josh Manning (Upton, MA), the fourth of eight Tufts hurlers, picked up the win on the mound for the visitors, who extended their winning streak to four straight with the triumph.
Juniors Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, MA) and Aram Mulhern (Taunton, MA), along with sophomore Bob Lee (Braintree, MA), collected hits in the setback for the host Buccaneers (6-5), as sophomore Chris Gallagher (East Sandwich, MA) allowed an earned run and fanned two over the first 2.1 innings of play in suffering the setback on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime.
Tufts travels to Lewiston, Maine tomorrow to begin a three-game New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division three-game set beginning at 3:00 pm. Massachusetts Maritime travels to North Adams, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on MCLA in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference double-header that begins at 1:00 pm.
