Senior Dave Ryan's 13 strikeouts were the most by a Tufts pitcher since 2009

MEDFORD - Tufts senior pitcher Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) struck out 13 Colby batters in seven innings, while the Jumbo offense had 11 hits and took advantage of seven errors by the Mules for a 14-4 win in a NESCAC East Division baseball game on Friday afternoon at Huskins Field.
For the Jumbos, senior SS Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) finished 3 for 5 with three runs and an rbi, senior DH Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) went 2 for 4 with three runs and three rbi, freshman 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) had a 2 for 5 afternoon with three rbi and freshman CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) score three runs. Tufts improved to 13-6 overall and 4-3 in the division.
Colby, which dropped to 9-12 and 0-4, was led by senior CF Nikolas Atsalis (West Hyannisport, MA) at 2 for 4 with two runs, and a 2 for 3 with two rbi day by senior 2B Taro Gold (Belmont, MA).
The game's first eight runs were all unearned as both teams committed errors. Colby led 1-0 after Atsalis singled and eventually scored when a wild pitch on a strike out was thrown away at first base. The Jumbos would score one in the first and six in the second with the help of four Mules errors. Collins had a two-run double in the second, while both Hauser and sophomore LF Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) added rbi singles.
Ryan had six strikeouts through three innings before Colby strung together three hits to open the fourth. Senior 3B Mike Mastrocola (Southbury, CT) led off with a single, freshman RF Luke Duncklee (Augusta, ME) doubled and both scored on Gold's double to right. However, Ryan prevented further damage recording two more strikeouts and the Jumbos led 7-3.
Hauser's two-run single highlighted a four-run fifth inning that put Tufts up 11-3. McDavitt drove in a run with a ground ball and also scored in the inning. A lead-off triple by junior 1B Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) led to three more Jumbo runs in the sixth and a 14-3 advantage.
Colby added an unearned run in the seventh against Ryan, who finished his stint with back-to-back strikeouts. He improved to 4-1 allowing eight hits and four runs (two earned) with two walks in seven innings. Freshmen Willie Archibald (Milton, MA) and Joe Harrington (Burke, VA) pithced 1-2-3 innings in relief for Tufts.
Mules junior Nate Sugarbaker (Milton, MA) took the loss, allowing six hits and 10 runs (three earned) with five walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
The teams play a double-header tomorrow starting at noon.
