|
SOMERVILLE - With the rest of the team competing at Stonehill, four decathletes from the Tufts men's track & field team competed at Ellis Oval on Saturday and Sunday.
It was the first attempt at the multi-event this season for all Tufts athletes. They looked to record solid baseline performances and qualify for future meets.
Tufts Junior Mike Blair (Wellesley, MA) earned the victory in the nine-man field with 6,168 points. That total currently ranks sixth nationally. En route to overall victory, Blair won the long jump with a leap of 21'6 1/4" (6.56m) and tied for first in the high jump with his clearance of 6'4 3/4" (1.95m).
Sophomore Andrew Osborne (Andover, MA) placed fifth with 5,121 points. His best events were the 100 meters where he placed third in a time of 11.66 seconds and the long jump where he leaped 21'0 3/4" (6.42m) to notch another third-place finish.
Freshman Allen Yau (Andover, MA) tallied 4,120 points for seventh. His effort was highlighted by a top-five finish in the pole vault with his clearance of 10'3 1/2" (3.14m).
Senior Alex Orchowski (Cornwall, NY) only competed in day one of the competition, so he did not assemble a complete score. His best effort came in the high jump where he cleared 6'4 3/4" (1.95m) to tie Blair for first.
With the first decathlon under their belt, these athletes will get back to work in hopes of improving their scores in championship meets.
Next weekend, these decathletes will rejoin the rest of the team to compete in the MIT Invitational.
