LOWELL - With 10 top-eight finishes, most of them by underclassmen, the Jumbo men's track & field team showcased its depth and young talent in the non-scoring George Davis Invitational at UMass Lowell on Saturday.
The Jumbos were able battle through cold and windy conditions to record solid times that qualified for championship meets.
Tufts athletes fared well in the distance events. Sophomore Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) took third in the steeplechase with a time of 9:34.85. Classmate Brian McLaughlin (Barrington, RI) recorded a time of 15:15.03 in the 5,000 to place fourth. He was backed by two more sophomores. Bobby McShane (Mansfield, MA) placed sixth with a time of 15:17.79, while Darryl Varney (Andover, MA) was close behind in seventh with a time of 15:23.43.
One other sophomore notched a stellar performance. as Graham Beutler (Weston, CT) placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 51.41 seconds. Meanwhile, two freshmen recorded impressive times on the track. Ptah Osayande (Wallingford, PA) ran a time of 55.93 in the 400 hurdles to place fourth, while Evan Cover (Traverse City, MI) placed eighth in the 800 with a time of 1:56.74.
The Tufts throwers had a productive day as well. Senior co-captain Adam Aronson (Norwood, MA) was the runner-up in the hammer throw with a heave of 171'2" (52.17m). Backing him up was junior Curtis Yancy (St. Louis, MO) whose throw of 153'6" (46.80m) was good enough for fifth. In the shot put, freshman Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) finished seventh with a throw of 44''9 3/4" (13.66m).
The impressive performances by the freshmen and sophomores is certainly a great sign for the future. The Jumbos will look to build off these solid early-season marks as the season progresses.
Next weekend, Coach Ethan Barron's team will compete in the Skyhawk Classic at Stonehill College.
