Box Score
MEDFORD - Junior Emily Cannon (Atkinson, NH) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead the Tufts field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Colby College in a NESCAC game on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.
The Jumbos dominated play for most of the game, finishing with a 33-7 advantage in shots and 23-2 in penalty corners. However, Colby was opportunistic offensively and junior goalie Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, CT) made 15 saves to keep it close.
Tufts took a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the action when senior co-captain Lia Sagerman (LaJolla, CA) tallied her third goal of the year on a rebound. Colby came right back and scored on their only shot of the first half as first-year Ellie Donohue (Andover, MA) scored on an attempt that bounced off a Tufts defender in front. That tied the game 1-1 with 26:15 on the clock.
The quick scoring pace continued, as Cannon scored her first on a play in front with 11:47 elapsed and Tufts was up 2-1. That's how the half ended, with the Jumbos holding a 19-1 advantage in shots and 9-0 in corners.
Cannon's second goal of the game come on a beautiful backhand shot off a pass from first-year Amanda Jamison (Gaithersburg, MD) to make it 3-1 with 17 minutes remaining in regulation. The Mules cut the margin to 3-2 on a great passing play from first-year Megan Fortier (Falmouth, ME) to sophomore Kaitlyn O'Connell (Danvers, MA) with 10:36 remaining. However, that's how it ended.
Tufts improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in NESCAC with their fourth straight win. Sophomore Brianna Keenan (Greenland, NH) earned the win in goal, making two second-half saves. The Jumbos turn-around and take a trip to Trinity tomorrow for a tough conference game at 1 pm.
Colby, which saw a two-game winning streak end, dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the league. They host Thomas on Tuesday at 7 pm.
