BOSTON - The Jumbo men's track & field team notched three wins and ten top-five finishes at the non-scoring multi-team meet hosted by Boston University on Thursday night.
The small squad of Tufts athletes who suited up looked to notch impressive early-season performances against stellar competition from Division I and II schools.
Junior Jamie Norton (Groton, MA) recorded the first victory of the night, as he clocked a 4:10.48 in the mile to out-run a competitive field. Tufts' other victory on the track came from junior Dan Lange Vagle (St. Paul, MN). He won the 200 in an impressive time of 22.36, only 0.08 off the school record.
Senior Mike Blair (Wellesley, MA) and freshman Alex Kasimer finished in the top-five in running events. Blair took third in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.17, while Kasimer placed fourth in the 500 with a time of 1:07.56.
The 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Lange Vagle, senior Vinnie Lee (Walpole, MA), junior Graham Beutler (Weston, CT), and senior tri-captain Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL) finished in the runner-up spot with a time of 3:23.57.
The field events were also strong for the Jumbos. Senior Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) won the triple jump with a leap of 46'1 ½" (14.06m) and placed second in the long jump with his distance of 21'7 ¼" (6.58m).
Junior Trevor Rothaus (Placentia, CA) took third in the pole vault with his clearance of 13'9 ¼" (4.20m). Also notching a third-place finish was sophomore Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS). He heaved the shot put 47'1" (14.35m).
Senior tri-captain Curtis Yancy (St. Louis, MO) also fared well in a throwing event. He was the runner-up in the weight throw with his toss of 56'1 ¼" (17.10m).
These solid early-season performances should give the team some momentum as the season starts to heat up. They will return to BU to compete in the Terrier Invitational next Friday and Saturday. But first, the attention turns to the Bowdoin Invitational, where the rest of the team will be competing this Saturday.
