MALDEN - Williams College sophomore Peter Mistretta (New Canaan, CT) scored twice and sophomore goalie Sean Dougherty (Smithtown, NY) made 32 saves as the visiting Ephs posted a 5-3 win at Tufts in a NESCAC men's hockey game at Valley Forum II on Friday night.
Three times the Ephs answered Tufts goals with scores of their own within a minute. With the victory, Williams improved to 10-4-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the league. Tufts dropped to 5-9-2 and 1-8-2 in NESCAC.
The Jumbos scored first as sophomore defenseman Blake Edwards (Columbus, OH) tallied his third of the year at 8:16 of the opening period with a drive from the left side. However, the Ephs answered when Mistretta scored similarly at 9:15 to tie the game 1-1. Dougherty and Jumbo junior goalie Brian Phillips (Colleyville, TX) both had 10 saves as the game went to the first intermission tied 1-1.
Mistretta's second goal was a beauty as he took a feed in front and dragged Phillips out of the net by stalling his shot before depositing it high into the cage for his 13th of the year at 6:22 of the second. In the middle of the period, the Jumbos killed a 26-second 5-on-3 advantage for Williams to keep it a one-goal game.
Tufts would then tie it 2-2 at 15:44 of the middle stanza on a goal by sophomore Derek Schartz (Plano, TX), but the Ephs answered again. Just nine seconds later, sophomore Alex DeBaere (Wayland, MA) knocked in a goal from close range and it was 3-2 Ephs.
The visitors expanded their margin to 4-2 on senior co-captain John Wickman's (Dallas, TX) goal 1:25 into the third period. The Jumbos would get back within one (4-3) when freshman Stewart Bell (Marietta, GA) netted his sixth of the year at 12:24. Again though, Williams retaliated just 31 seconds later at 12:55 when junior Nick Anderson capped the scoring.
The Jumbos finished with a 15-8 advantage in shots for the third, but Dougherty made 14 saves in the period. At the other end, Phillips finished the night with 24 saves.
The game was played in under two hours and featured just six penalties with three on each side. Tufts had a 35-29 margin in total shots.
The Jumbos host Middlebury tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm while Williams heads to Connecticut College for a 3 pm start.
