Tufts Men's Track & Field Assembles Several Impressive Times at Competitive Terrier Classic

Senior Kyle Marks' 5,000 time was one of the best in the country to date

BOSTON - The Jumbo men's track and field team took advantage of a fast track and stellar competition to record several fast times at the Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University on Saturday.

The non-scoring meet hosts some of the fastest runners from all over the northeast, including some professionals. The Tufts track athletes suited up in hope of setting personal-bests, while the field event athletes competed across town at MIT.

The Jumbos highest finish of the day was recorded by senior Kyle Marks (Carmel, IN). He placed eighth out of 64 in the 5,000 with a personal-best time of 14:33.63. That mark ranks in the top five nationally, but will likely have to be improved upon for Marks to qualify for the NCAA Championship.

Marks was backed by junior Andrew Shapero (Laguna Beach, CA), who dipped under the 15-minute barrier for the first time in his career. His time of 14:58.15 was good enough for 24th.

Tufts also fared well in the 3,000. Junior Jamie Norton (Groton, MA) led the way, running a new personal-best of 8:35.26 to place 44th of 146. Classmate Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) returned from injury to clock a time of 8:47.26 to place 77th, while sophomore Greg Hardy (Barnstable, MA) took a huge step forward with a new personal-best time of 8:50.63 to place 88th.

In the 800, freshman Mitch Black (Brunswick, ME) recorded one of the best times by a freshman in school history, as he clocked a 1:53.19 to place 10th of 143. He was backed by senior tri-captain Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL), who placed 14th in a time of 1:53.67.

Senior Adam Brosh (Agoura Hills, CA) led a large Tufts contingent in the mile with his time of 4:20.24, placing him 62nd in the field of 176. The event was won by the 2012 Olympic 10,000 meter silver medalist Galen Rupp of the Nike Oregon Project. He ran a facility-record time of 3:50.92.

In the long sprints, senior Vinnie Lee (Walpole, MA) set the pace for the Jumbos, as he clocked a time of 49.90 in the 400 to place 47th of 147. He was backed by freshman Woody Butler who placed 54th in a time of 50.16.

These stellar early-season performances will give the squad some momentum heading into the mid-season meets, where athletes will look to hit more qualifying times.

Next weekend, coach Ethan Barron's team will return home to host the Tufts Stampede at the Gantcher Center.
