Box Score
MEDFORD - Senior co-captain Chelsea Yogerst (San Diego, CA) scored a school-record five goals, including four in the first half, as the #5 Tufts field hockey team rolled to a 7-1 non-conference victory against the University of New England on Thursday at Bello Field.
Yogerst broke the 34-year old Tufts record of four goals owned by Barb Sprague against Pine Manor during the 1979 season. The team's leading scorer last season, Yogerst entered the game with four goals this fall and more than doubled her total to nine.
Her four first-half goals gave the Jumbos a 4-0 lead at intermission. They were set up by sophomore Rachel Terveer (London, OH) at 8:31, first-year Annie Artz (Gates Mills, OH) at 9:45, senior Emily Cannon (Atkinson, NH) at 24:28 and sophomore Allison Rolfe (East Dennis, MA) at 26:54.
The Jumbos dominated the first 35 minutes to the tune of a 15-1 advantage in shots and 6-2 in penalty corners. UNE first-year goalie Holly Smith (Peabody, MA) made five saves in the first half.
The visiting Nor'easters showed some pluck early in the second half as they narrowed the margin to 4-1. Senior co-captain Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, ME) made a beautiful drive down the left side of the field before passing to junior Erin Bibber (Charlton, MA) for the goal. Bibber's sixth of the season came barely two minutes into the period.
Tufts, however, took the ball on the following possession and Yogerst scored her fifth of the game just 33 seconds later. Rolfe had her second assist of the game on the play.
The Jumbos would add the first career goal by first-year Dominique Zarrella (Leominster, MA) at 46:54 and then the 11th tally of the season by sophomore Dakota Sikes-Keilp (Montclair, NJ) at 55:31. The seven goals were the most by a Tufts team since an 8-0 win over Castleton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last November 7.
Tufts finished with a 30-4 margin in shots and 15-5 in corners. Despite allowing seven goals, Smith was strong in the UNE cage with 12 saves. Jumbo first-year goalie Carrie Cook (Medfield, MA) played the second half and made one save in relief of starter and winner Bri Keenan (Greenland, NH) who also had one stop.
Returning to NESCAC action on Saturday, the Jumbos host Connecticut College in a noon start. UNE has Roger Williams at home in a Commonwealth Coast Conference title Saturday at 1 pm.
