MEDFORD - Sophomore Rachel Terveer (London, OH) scored two goals as the #5 Tufts University field hockey team posted a 4-2 victory over NESCAC opponent #6 Middlebury College Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.
With the win, the Jumbos improve to 7-1 on the year and 5-1 in conference, while the Panthers suffered just their second loss of the season dropping their record to 7-2 and 4-2 in NESCAC.
The Jumbos were awarded a penalty stroke early in the first half taken by senior Emily Cannon (Atkinson, NH), who placed it in the lower right corner, but Middlebury keeper Emily Knapp (Scarsdale, NY) made a beautiful diving save to keep the game scoreless.
At the 29-minute mark, Tufts took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Allison Rolfe (East Dennis, MA) gathered a loose ball off a corner and fed it to Terveer who knocked it in for her first goal of the season and the lead at halftime.
The Panthers evened the game in the 40th minute on a give and go at the top of the corner with Catherine Fowler (Grosse Pointe, MI) and Katherine Theiss (Wilmette, IL) who sent it to the back of the net.
The Jumbos answered back by scoring three unanswered goals in a span of 12 minutes. Terveer added her second goal of the game when she gathered a rebound off the goalkeeper for a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Dakota Sikes-Keilp (Montclair, NJ) would then score back-to-back goals, giving her team a 4-1 second-half advantage.
The Panthers would not go away as they continued pressuring the Jumbo defense. Pam Shulman (Greenwich, CT) would bring her team within two goals when she drilled a shot from the top of the circle off a corner.
Tufts out-shot Middlebury 15-11 in the game and held a slim edge in penalty corners 7-5. Junior Brianna Keenan (Greenland, NH) made seven saves in the win, while Knapp turned away five saves in the loss for the Panthers.
Tufts will return to action on Thursday when they host the University of New England at 5 pm for a non-conference game. Middlebury will conclude their road trip tomorrow at MIT at 1 pm.
