RUTLAND, VT – Manhattanville controlled play throughout and came away with a 3-0 victory over Tufts to claim the Rutland Herald Invitational Championship on Sunday afternoon in Spartan Arena.
The Valiants outshot the Jumbos 35-28 in the contest, getting a shutout from Alex Scola in net to improve to 5-4 with the victory. Matt Coleman was named Tournament MVP after scoring a hat trick on Saturday and dishing off a pair of assists against Tufts. The Jumbos, meanwhile, drop to 1-6 on the year.
Manhattanville opened the scoring 4:24 into the contest as Jake Mooney scored on a power play to give the Valiants a 1-0 lead. Manhattanville stayed on the power play due to the five-minute Tufts penalty and Mooney made it 2-0 off a feed from Matt Coleman at 6:03.
In the second period neither team was able to convert as Manhattanville outshot the Jumbos 12-8. The third period remained scoreless until Mooney finished off his hat trick by scoring on an empty net with just 10 seconds remaining.
Scola finished with 28 saves in his shutout effort while Ryan Kellenberger made 33 stops in the loss for Tufts.
Mooney was named to the All-Tournament team along with teammates Scola and Adam Young. Stewart Bell of Tufts was named to the team along with defenseman Brendan Fadden. Ross Herzog of Castleton was the final member of the all-tournament team.
Manhattanville returns to action when it faces Connecticut College at 7 pm on Tuesday. Tufts resumes NESCAC play next Friday at Colby.
