WATERVILLE, ME - Tufts University scored three goals in a time span of 9 minutes, 28 seconds of the third period to break a 2-2 tie on the way to a 5-2 victory over Colby College in NESCAC men's hockey Friday night at Alfond Rink.
Tufts moves to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the Mules drop to 3-3-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the league.
Colby tied the game at 2-2 with 32.5 seconds left in the second period and appeared to have momentum heading into the final 20 minutes.
Blake Edwards (Columbus, OH) scored the game-winning goal for the Jumbos at 5:29 of the third when he scored in front off a quick passing sequence from Keith Campbell (Newark, DE) and Derrek Schartz (Plano, TX).
Tufts went up 4-2 at 7:39 on a transition goal from Brian Ouellette (Arlington, MA), who scored his first of the season when he came in hard and stuffed a rebound in off an initial shot from Mike Leary (Wakefield, MA).
The Jumbos put the game away at 5-2 at 14:57 when Tyler Voigt (Rochester, MN) took a long pass near the right boards. His shot from a tough angle went in for his second goal of the night. Stewart Bell (Marietta, GA) and Sean Kavanagh (Wilbraham, MA) had assists.
Colby led 1-0 after the opening period on Ben Chwick's (Purchase, NY) fifth goal of the season. Nick Lanza (Rocky Hill, CT) found Chwick alone in front and he buried a low shot.
Tufts took a power play into the second period and converted 55 seconds in when Conal Lynch (Charlestown, MA) one-timed a cross from Bell. Voigt also had an assist.
The Jumbos went ahead when Voigt tallied with just 2:28 to play in the second period. A pass appeared to go off a Colby defender's skate and went directly to a wide open Voigt in front.
Jack Burton (Reisterstown, MD) scored a strange goal for Colby to knot the game at 2-2. He took a cross from Chwick and ripped a shot that seemed at first to be saved by Tufts goalie Ryan Kellenberger (Los Altos, CA) after the puck bounced away. The referee on the line called it a goal and Burton had a delayed celebration after there was a moment of uncertainty about the score.
Kellenberger finished with 31 saves, including 15 in the second period. Colby goalie Sam Parker (Cambridge, MA) had 23 saves.
Voigt finished with two goals and an assist for Tufts. Bell and Cavanagh both recorded two assists for the winner.
Chwick finished with a goal and an assist to lead Colby.
