MEDFORD - Traveling to neutral site Dayton Arena at Connecticut College for its NESCAC game against Hamilton on Sunday, the Tufts hockey team received three goals from sophomore Andrew White (Rockland, MA) to take a 6-4 victory over the Continentals.
The Jumbos had jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of one period before Hamilton stormed back to tie the score at 3-3 early in the third period. However, Tufts scored three of the next four goals, including two by White, to earn the win.
The two points were important for Tufts, which is now 7-12-2 overall and 2-11-2 in NESCAC as they look to finish among the top eight to qualify for the conference tournament. They won under unusual circumstances, having to travel to Connecticut for a home game due to the rescheduling of games because of the snow storm over the weekend.
Eleven players scored points for the Jumbos, with sophomore forward Tyler Voigt (Rochester, MN), sophomore defenseman Shawn Power (Arlington, MA), and junior defenseman David Carson (Avon Lake, OH) all recording two points in the game. Junior goalie Brian Phillips (Colleyville, TX) stopped 43 shots.
Hamilton, now 5-13-3 overall and 3-10-2 in the conference, was led by a goal and an assist by Kenny Matheson.
The Jumbos jumped to the 3-0 first-period lead on goals by White, Voigt, and junior Tim Mitropoulos (Winchester, MA). The Jumbos out-shot the Continentals 16-8 in the first 20 minutes and scored the Mitropoulos goal shortly after a power play ended.
The second period was scoreless, with Tufts maintaining its three-goal advantage. Phillips had 17 saves and Hamilton's Joe Quattrocchi made 11 in the middle stanza.
Hamilton scored three goals in the first 8:19 of the third period to stun the Jumbos and tie the score 3-3. With the teams playing four-on-four during the first 1:05 of the period, Dom Jancaterino and Matheson both scored pulling the Continentals within 3-2. Matt Tetro's tally at 8:19 tied the game.
Tufts responded, getting a goal by junior Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, CO) just 28 seconds later. The goal would give the Jumbos the lead for good. White would then notch the eventual game-winner on a power play at 14:38.
However, the Continentals made it interesting again on a power play goal by Pat Curtis with just 3:07 remaining in the third. White iced it for Tufts though, scoring an empty-netter late.
Hamilton swarmed the Jumbo net with 22 shots in the third period. Phillips stopped 18, but the Continentals scored four goals in the period. Seven goals in total were scored during the third.
Quattrocchi finished with 28 saves for Hamilton, which had defeated Tufts 3-1 earlier in the season.
Tufts hosts Amherst tomorrow night at 6 pm in the final home game of the season. The Continentals are at Connecticut College tomorrow at 4 pm.
