Amherst would score three times in the second period to take control. Junior Brian Safstrom (Woodinville, WA) scored unassisted 4:29 into the period and then helped set up Kurlandski's eventual game-winner at 7:27 to put the visitors up 2-1. Sophomore Andrew Fenwick (Quispamsis, NB) snapped a wrist shot past Phillips from the left face-off circle at 13:18 of the second to give the Lord Jeffs a 3-1 margin. Amherst senior goalie Nathan Corey (Anchorage, AK) stopped all 10 shots that he faced in the period.
Kurlandski's second of the game and 10th of the season on a power play just 1:27 into the third period put Amherst up 4-1. Sophomore Mike Rowbotham (Stittsville, ONT) collected his 17th assist of the season on the goal. The Lord Jeffs then put the cherry on top of the sundae with goals by Dylan Trumble (Calgary, ALB) on a power play and the first of freshman Kevin Ryder's (Gates Mills, OH) career just 21 seconds later in the middle of the period giving Amherst a 6-1 advantage.
Like Safstrom, Fenwick finished with a goal and an assist for Amherst. Senior Jamie Hawkrigg (Waterdown, ONT) had two assists. Corey picked up his 10th win with 23 saves before he was relieved in the final 10 minutes by freshman Dave Cunningham (Arlington, MA).
Phillips recorded 28 saves for Tufts, while junior Greg Jenkins (Washington, DC) played the final 10 minutes and stopped all six shots that he faced.
Tufts, trying to move up into the eighth spot in NESCAC in order to earn a conference tournament berth, plays at Bowdoin on Friday at 7 pm and then at Colby on Saturday at 3 pm. Amherst hosts Williams and Middlebury on the final weekend of the regular season.
