MEDFORD - Senior tri-captain Curtis Yancy (St. Louis, MO) tied a 62-year old school- record in the weight throw to lead the Jumbo men's track and field team in the final meet of the regular-season on Monday at the Gantcher Center.
Tufts athletes used this non-scoring meet to establish or improve upon qualifying marks for Saturday's New England Div. III Championship.
Yancy did much more than that as he heaved the weight 61'8 ½" (18.81m) to easily win the event. He tied the oldest school record in the books, originally set by Tom Bane in 1951. Yancy's launch was also a Gantcher Center record. Bane's toss 62 years ago was also the world record at the time. The distance moves Yancy up to sixth in the national rankings so far this season.
Senior Andre Figueroa (Bronx, NY) also recorded a stellar mark in the weight throw. His distance of 52'10" (16.10m) was a season-best and placed second behind Yancy on Monday.
Two freshmen also fared well in a throwing event, as Alex Karys (Newton, MA) and AJ Fields (New Rochelle, NY) placed fourth and fifth in the shot put with marks of 41'4 ½" (12.61m) and 38'11 ¾" (11.88m) respectively.
The Jumbos notched two third-place finishes in other field events, as junior Trevor Rothaus (Placentia, CA) cleared 14'1 ¼" (4.30m) in the pole vault and freshman Bryson Hoover Hankerson (Owings Mills, MD) leaped 20'2 ½" (6.16m) in the long jump.
On the track, junior Graham Beutler (Weston, CT) returned after a battle with mononucleosis to win the 200 in an impressive time of 22.65, which qualifies him for Saturday's New England Championship.
Senior Sam Haney (Essex, CT) also qualified with his time of 4:19.54 in the mile, which was good enough for sixth.
These stellar performances will give the Jumbos some momentum heading into championship season, which begins on Saturday with the Div. III New England Championship at Bates.
