BOSTON - The Jumbo men's track & field team recorded some impressive performances at the competitive All-New England Championship at Boston University on Friday and Saturday.
The meet is an opportunity for athletes to set personal-bests and hit qualifying marks while competing against the best in the region regardless of division.
Freshman Mitch Black (Brunswick, ME) continued his stellar rookie season, clocking a season-best time of 1:51.89 in the 800 on Friday. That mark ranks in the top five nationally this season. Black went on to place fourth in the 800 final on Saturday with a time of 1:52.77.
Senior tri-captain Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL) also clocked a season-best time of 1:53.14, but did not advance to the final. He will have to improve his time next week in order to be one of the 13 to qualify for the NCAA Championship.
The Jumbos fared well in two other mid-distance events, as junior Jamie Norton (Groton, MA) placed 14th in the mile with a time of 4:11.13, and senior Adam Brosh (Agoura Hills, CA) clocked a personal-best time of 2:30.85 in the 1000 to place 16th.
In the 3,000, junior Liam Cassidy (Brunswick, ME) was able to notch a season-best time of 8:38.73 to place 15th.
Tufts recorded solid performances in the field events as well. Senior tri-captain Curtis Yancy (St. Louis, MO) took fourth in the weight throw with his heave of 59'7 ¾" (18.18m). In the shot put, sophomore Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) threw a distance of 47'4 ½" (14.44m) to place 17th.
Senior Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) was in action in both horizontal jumping events. He took 18th in the long jump with a leap of 21'4" (6.50m). In the triple jump, he fared better as his distance of 47'2 ½" (14.39m) placed ninth in the meet and ranks 16th nationally so far this season.
Tufts athletes will have one more opportunity to improve qualifying marks before the NCAA Championship, as the Jumbos will host a last-chance qualifying meet at the Gantcher Center next Saturday.
