Jumbo Baseball Routs Castleton for Second Straight Day to Improve to 2-0 on Spring Trip

Box Score
Junior Max Freccia had four hits and four rbi for Tufts

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Tufts baseball team out-hit Castleton 18-3 on Saturday morning, including four hits by junior DH Max Freccia (Stamford, CT), as the Jumbos defeated the Spartans by double-digit runs for the second straight day, 14-4.

The Jumbos trailed early for the second day in a row, but again were able to find their firepower as the game wore on. They had defeated Castleton 13-4 at Apprentice School to open their season on Friday. Saturday's game included a 45-minute rain delay.

In a 9:00 am start on Saturday morning, sophomore CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) was 2 for 5 with three runs, sophomore 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) went 3 for 5 with four runs and an rbi, senior RF Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, FL) finished 3 for 5 with three rbi and a run, and sophomore catcher Bryan Egan (Watervliet, NY) had a 3 for 5 day with a run and an rbi. Freccia added four rbi and a run to his four hits.

Tufts sophomore starter Kyle Slinger (Danville, CA) gave up three runs in the second, but settled down to earn the win. He allowed just the three hits and struck out five while walking four. Freshman Andrew David (Pacific, MO), sophomore Willie Archibald (Milton, MA), and sophomore Tom Ryan (Walpole, MA) all hurled hitless innings of relief.

After Hauser tripled home a run and scored in the first to help Tufts take a 2-0 lead, Castleton responded with three in the top of the second. Tyler Lord struck the biggest blow with a two-run triple and he scored on a single by catcher Mat Pause. Spartan DH Connor Hoagland started the third with a walk and scored to put Castleton up 4-2.

The Jumbos would score 10 runs in the third through fifth innings, including seven (six unearned) in the third. Egan had a run-scoring double and Freccia hit a two-run single in the inning. After another unearned run in the fourth, Weikert rapped a two-run single in the fifth and Tufts had a 12-4 lead.

With the Jumbo bullpen mowing down Castleton, Tufts cruised to the win with additional runs scored on a Freccia single in the seventh and an eighth unearned run of the game in the eighth inning.

Tufts (2-0) will face St. Vincent later on Saturday at the Apprentice School beginning at 3 pm. Castleton is headed home with a 1-3 mark and they will play St. Joseph's, ME next Saturday.
