Freshman Andrew David threw a shutout in his first college start

GREENSBORO, NC - Freshman pitcher Andrew David (Pacific, MO) threw a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks as the Tufts baseball team improved to 4-0 with a 4-0 victory at Guilford on Monday afternoon.
David gave up a lead-off single to Guilford CF Herc Ingels before retiring the next 11 batters. Quaker 3B Corey Wallace had a two-out single in the fourth and later doubled in the seventh. David retired 10 batters on ground outs and 10 on fly balls. The victory is the first of his college career.
Tufts has not lost yet on its spring trip to start the season. Jumbo pitching is holding opponents to a .122 batting average in 38 innings thus far. Guilford dropped to 9-11.
The Jumbos scored three times in the second for all they would need, sparked by sophomore Matthew Luciani (Woodbridge, CT). He doubled home two runs after lead-off walks by senior RF Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) and junior DH Max Freccia (Stamford, CT). Luciani scored on a ground out by senior 1B Tom Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) making it 3-0 Tufts.
Weikert's one-out double in the sixth was followed by an RBI single from Freccia to plate the other Tufts run.
Sophomore catcher Bryan Egan (Watervliet, NY) had two of Tufts' nine hits in the game.
Guilford starter Dylan Clark allowed all four runs on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks in six innings. Avery Rogers (two innings) and Levi Pruitt (one inning) both pitched scoreless relief for the Quakers.
The Jumbos play twice tomorrow, at Averett with a 1:30 pm start and at night (6 pm) against Greensboro College. Guilford hosts Lynchburg tomorrow at 3 pm.
