Sophomore Bryan Egan doubled home two runs in the third

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Methodist University overcame a 6-2 deficit and posted an 8-7 victory against Tufts in non-league college baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. Brandon Thigpen hit a two-run double during a four-run sixth inning to give the Monarchs the lead.
After Methodist took an early 1-0 lead on an rbi single by Cody Molosky, Tufts scored five times in the third. Senior shortstop Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) and sophomore DH James Howard (Rocville Centre, NY) both had rbi singles and scored runs in the rally. Sophomore catcher Bryan Egan (Watervliet, NY) doubled home two runs.
Methodist's Chris Power led off the third with a double to center and stole third. He scored on a single by Travis Johnson pulling the Monarchs to 5-2. In the top of the fifth, Jumbo sophomore 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) singled and motored around the bases on Methodist miscues to give Tufts a 6-2 advantage.
The Monarchs cut the lead in half to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth when Stephen Nalls hit a two-run single up the middle. In the sixth, Will Buschmann led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. He scored on a single by Steven Kirby to make it 6-5. Kirby and Chris Power, who walked, both scored on the double by Thigpen, who then scored an additional run on an error for an 8-6 Methodist lead.
Double plays ended Jumbo rallies in the seventh and ninth innings. They did get a run in the top of the ninth after sophomore CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a single by Hauser. However a 4-6-3 double play ended the game.
Tufts out-hit Methodist 14-12. Hauser led the Jumbos at 3 for 5 with two runs and an rbi. Staniewicz, Howard, junior LF Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI), and McDavitt all had two hits. Junior Dean Lambert (Cross River, NY) took the loss on the mound, allowing nine hits and six runs with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Sophomore Tom Ryan (Walpole, MA) pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit, no run relief for Tufts.
Kirby, Power, Johnson, Nalls, and Molosky all had two hits for Methodist (9-15). The Monarchs used nine pitchers for one inning each. Reid Berry was the winning pitcher.
Tufts (5-2) plays at North Carolina Wesleyan on Thursday at 3 pm. The Monarchs are off tomorrow before hosting Maryville on Friday at 2 pm.
