Men's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season in Virginia with Several Impressive Performances

Ben Wallis was the steeplechase runner-up

LEXINGTON, VA - The Jumbo men's track & field team traveled south to Washington & Lee University to compete in the W&L Carnival on Friday and Saturday.

The squad took advantage of warmer weather to notch several stellar early-season marks at the un-scored meet.

Junior Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) recorded the highest finish of the meet for the Jumbos, as he placed second in the steeplechase with a time of 9:23.68. He was backed by sophomore Marshall Pagano (Niskayuna, NY), who returned from injury to clock a time of 10:06.45 to place sixth.

Tufts fared well in other mid-distance events, as four Jumbos broke the two-minute barrier in the 800. Freshman Mitch Black (Brunswick, ME) led the way in fourth with a time of 1:54.28. Fifth-year senior Connor Rose (Irvine, CA) took sixth in a time of 1:55.48, while freshman Veer Bhalla (West Windsor, NJ) and senior Adam Brosh (Agoura Hills, CA) clocked times of 1:56.48 and 1:58.38 to place eighth and 14th respectively.

Rose was also able to notch a solid performance in the 1,500, as he placed third in a time of 3:59.55. It was the All-American miler's first time breaking the 4-minute barrier in the outdoor 1,500.

Also notching a third-place finish was junior Graham Beutler (Weston, CT), as his time of 49.40 was good enough for the top three in the 400. In the 200, Beutler took sixth in a time of 22.17.

The Jumbo throwers were also very productive. Sophomore Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 49'5 ½" (15.07m) and fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 156'5" (47.67m).

Senior tri-captain Curtis Yancy (St. Louis, MO), an indoor NCAA qualifier, took sixth in the discus with a heave of 143'0" (43.59m) and sixth in the hammer with a mark of 156'9" (47.17m). He also supported Williamson in the shot put with an eighth-place finish and a mark of 45'4 ½" (13.83m).

These athletes will look to build on these solid performances as the season progresses. Next Saturday, the Jumbos will return home and compete as a full squad in the annual Snowflake Classic at Ellis Oval.
