MEDFORD - Seven Tufts pitchers shut out Massachusetts Maritime Academy on three hits as the Tufts baseball team opened its 2013 home season with a 6-0 victory over the Buccaneers on Wednesday afternoon at Huskins Field.

The Jumbos improved to 7-5 overall in the first game up north after their spring break trip. It was their second shutout of the season. Mass Maritime dropped to 3-5.

Buccaneer starter Tyler Smith (Bellingham, MA) shut down the Jumbos over the first four innings, allowing just a bunt single. Jumbo pitchers Andrew David (Pacific, MO) and Tom Ryan (Walpole, MA) allowed just one hit each in their two-inning stints to start the game and it was 0-0 heading into the fifth.

Back-to-back doubles with two outs by Jumbo senior SS Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) and sophomore CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) plated three runs in the fifth. Those were preceded by a pair of hit batsmen, which led to a two-run double by Staniewicz followed by McDavitt's rbi double.

The Jumbos would add two more in the sixth after sophomore 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) led off with a single. He would score on a sac fly by sophomore DH Bryan Egan (Watervliet, NY). A two-out single by junior LF Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) turned into another run on a single by junior catcher Nick Cutsumpas (White Plains, NY).

Meanwhile, Tufts pitching held the Buccaneers to just one hit from the second through seventh innings. Junior Josh Manning (Upton, MA), who was the winning pitcher, and sophomore Kyle Slinger (Danville, CA) both hurled 1-2-3 frames.

Mass Maritime used six pitchers. Junior Keith Sanchez (Monroe Township, NJ) was most effective with a scoreless seventh including two strikeouts. Smith took the loss, allowing three hits and three runs in 4.2 innings.

Cutsumpas, who added a triple to center for his second rbi in the eighth, and McDavitt had had two hits each for Tufts. Izzo scored twice.

Senior 2B Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, MA) had a two-out double for Mass Maritime in the eighth.
