PROVIDENCE, RI - The Jumbo men's track & field team notched several top 10 finishes at the competitive Springtime Invitational at Brown on Saturday.
The un-scored meet provided an opportunity to face top-notch competition from all divisions and record championship-qualifying marks.
The only Tufts victory came in the triple jump, as senior Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) leaped 46'10" (14.27m) for the win.
Senior tri-captain Curtis Yancy (St. Louis, MO) placed in the top eight in three throwing events. He took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 48'1 ¼" (14.66m), eighth in the discus with a toss of 146'0" (44.50m), and launched the hammer 161'4" (49.17m) for eighth.
Sophomore Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) finished one place ahead of Yancy in the shot put (50'4" / 15.34m) and hammer (161'10" / 49.17m).
On the track, the Jumbos' highest finishes were recorded in the 5,000, as juniors Andrew Shapero (Laguna Beach, CA) and Brian McLaughlin (Barrington, RI) took third and fourth with times of 15:20.58 and 15:23.67 respectively. Those marks will qualify for the DIII New England Championship.
In the 400, junior Graham Beutler (Weston, CT) tied for fourth with a time of 49.74, while freshman Veer Bhalla (Windsor, NJ) clocked a time of 1:55.05 in the 800 for eighth. Also placing eighth was sophomore Nick Guarnaccia (Reston, VA), as he ran a time of 10:12.78 in his debut in the steeplechase.
The squad will get back to work and look to improve on these solid performances as championship season nears.
Next weekend, coach Ethan Barron's team will compete in the MIT Invitational and the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton, the final regular season tune-ups before the NESCAC Championship.
