MEDFORD – Freshman Andrew David (Pacific, MO) pitched a shutout in the first game, and the Tufts baseball team had 16 hits in the second game as the Jumbos swept a double-header over UMass Dartmouth at Huskins Field on Monday. Game scores were 4-0 and 12-4.
Both games were seven innings. With the two wins, Tufts now has 10 straight victories and an 18-7 overall record. UMass Dartmouth, which entered on a three-game winning streak, fell to 10-13 overall.
In game one, David pitched his second shutout of the season. He allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter while striking out seven. Improving to 3-2, David allowed just one hit through five innings. All three of the hits he gave up came with two outs.
The Jumbos scored all of their runs in the bottom of the first. Three came courtesy of an opposite field home run by sophomore 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA). Later in the inning, sophomore catcher Nick Barker (Weymouth, MA) tripled to right field, scoring freshman 1B Mike Barry (Sudbury, MA) after he walked.
The game featured a triple play turned by UMass Dartmouth in the bottom of the fifth. With Jumbo runners on first and second, sophomore shortstop Nate Farias (Fall River, MA) snared a low line drive. With both runners on the move, Farias stepped on second and threw to first for the triple play.
UMass Dartmouth starter John Quigg (Weymouth, MA) settled down after the first. He allowed just one hit in the second through fifth innings, though he did hit three batters. He surrendered just five hits overall, but took the loss (1-1).
Tufts junior DH Max Freccia (Stamford, CT) was the only player with multiple hits in the game, going 2 for 3. Sophomore Ryan Medeiros (East Lyme, CT) doubled to left for UMass Dartmouth in the sixth.
The Jumbos broke open game two with five runs in the fourth to lead 6-0. Junior catcher Nick Cutsumpas (White Plains, NY) singled and scored in the inning, and senior SS Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) roped a two-run double and also scored.
Tufts sophomore starter Willie Archibald (Milton, MA) pitched five scoreless innings before the Corsairs scored their first runs of the day on a three-run home run by sophomore DH Alex Newton (Saco, ME) in the sixth. That cut the Jumbo lead in half to 6-3.
However, Tufts would score six times in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. They batted around for the second time of the game and had six hits in the inning. Senior RF Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) singled and scored and junior Nick Martinez (Burlingame, CA) had a two-run pinch hit single.
Back-to-back doubles by junior CF Wayne Bolz (Billerica, MA) and Farias plated the fourth UMD run in the seventh.
Archibald earned his second win, going five innings allowing five hits and three runs. Staniewicz finished 3 for 5 with three runs and two rbi atop the Tufts order. Cutsumpas was 2 for 4 with two rbi and a run, while junior LF Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) singled in each of his three at bats. Sophomore DH Bryan Egan (Watervliet, NY) had rbis in two separate innings.
Freshman Paul Mahoney (North Andover, MA) took the game two loss for the Corsairs. He allowed eight hits and six runs (five earned) in 3.1 innings. Eight different players had hits for UMass Dartmouth.
Tufts travels to Colby to begin a NESCAC East weekend series on Friday at 3 pm. The Corsairs play a single Little East Conference game tomorrow at Rhode Island College. First pitch is 3:30 pm.
