Four-Run Fifth Helps Tufts Baseball Pull Away from Colby for 9-2 NESCAC East Victory

WATERVILLE, ME - Tufts University scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and go on for a 9-2 win against Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division baseball Friday at Coombs Field.

Tufts moves to 19-7 overall and 5-2 in conference play, while the Mules drop to 7-14 and 0-7 in the league. The two teams play a double-header Saturday at noon at Coombs Field.

Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) had three hits and scored two runs to lead the Jumbos. Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) added a pair of hits and drove in four runs, James Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) added two hits and two runs, and Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) finished with two hits, one run, and one rbi.

Kevin Galvin (Portsmouth, RI) led the Mules with three hits and one run, Jason Buco (Methuen, MA) returned to the line-up and had two hits and an rbi, and Tyler Starks (Milton, MA) had the other run and added a hit.

Tufts had four hits, three walks, advanced on three wild pitches, and one sacrifice bunt to score four runs in the fourth inning. Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) had a walk to lead off the inning, moved to second on a single by Staniewicz, and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Howard. McDavitt scored on a single by Hauser and Staniewicz came in on a wild pitch. After a walk to Max Freccia (Stamford, CT) loaded the bases and then a strikeout by Colby starter Soren Hanson (Billerica, MA), Izzo followed with a two-run single for the other runs.

The Jumbos put the game away with three more runs in the top of the ninth inning on Izzo's two-run double that scored Howard and pinch-runner Eric Robinson (New York, NY). The Mules had two errors in the inning.

The game was tight for the opening four innings. The Jumbos and Colby both scored lone runs in the first inning. Howard singled and later scored on a wild pitch, while Buco's double brought in Starks.

The Jumbos added an unearned run in the third inning from Staniewicz, while Galvin singled and scored on a bases loaded walk by John Schroeder (Glencoe, IL) in the fourth inning.

Andrew David (Pacific, MO) started the fifth inning and allowed just one hit over the final five innings to earn the victory. He struck out four and walked one for Tufts.
