PRINCETON, NJ - Eight members of the Jumbo men's track & field team traveled to Princeton on Friday to face-off against stellar competition from all divisions in the Larry Ellis Invitational.
The meet serves as an opportunity to notch-personal bests and qualify for championship meets.
Freshman Mitch Black (Brunswick, ME) did just that, as he clocked an outdoor personal-record time of 1:52.51 in the 800 meters. That mark currently ranks in the top 10 nationally, but may have to be improved upon by season's end for Black to be among the top 20 who qualify for the NCAA Championship.
Senior tri-captain Jeff Marvel (Naples, FL) also competed in the 800. He clocked a time of 2:03.09 as he continues to build strength from an early-season injury.
Junior Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) put together a solid performance in the steeplechase, as his time of 9:15.74 currently ranks in the top 10 nationally. Like Black, Wallis will most likely have to improve this time to qualify for NCAA's.
In the 1,500, junior Jamie Norton (Groton, MA) and fifth-year senior Connor Rose (Irvine, CA) both recorded quality times. Norton clocked a 3:54.44, while Rose notched a five-second personal-best time of 3:54.77.
Seniors Tyler Andrews (Concord, MA), Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME), and Kyle Marks (Carmel, IN) represented Tufts in the 5,000. Andrews came away with an eight- second personal-best of 14:45.89, while Rand and Marks clocked times of 14:52.42 and 14:54.74 respectively.
These athletes will look to improve their times in upcoming championship meets. Next weekend, they will rejoin their teammates at home as the Jumbos will host the NESCAC Championship at Ellis Oval.
