WATERVILLE, ME - The Colby College baseball team took two of three games from Tufts University for the second year in a row after sweeping a double-header by 5-4 and 3-2 scores in extra innings on Saturday in NESCAC East play at Coombs Field.
Colby moves to 9-14 overall and 2-7 in the conference, while Tufts falls to 19-9 overall and 5-4 in the league. The Mules had gone 0-9 against the Jumbos in the three previous years before last season. Tufts saw an 11-game winning streak come to an end.
The first game was scheduled for seven innings and went nine. The second contest was scheduled for nine innings, but the rules state that since the first game went extra innings the second game switches to a seven-inning contest.
Tim Corey had a big day for the Mules, finishing 4 for 4 with a pair of runs and two rbi in the opener. He then had the game-tying rbi single in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap and drove in the game-winning runs after getting to first on a fielder's choice.
Alec Finigan had two hits and scored twice in the opener for Colby. John Schroeder drove in a run and had one hit, while Kevin Galvin scored once and had one hit.
Mike Barry (Sudbury, MA) led Tufts in the first game with three hits and an rbi, while Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) finished with two hits. Nick Barker (Weymouth, MA) had one hit, one run, and drove in a run.
The Mules led 3-0 after the first inning after Finigan reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a single by Galvin. Corey's rbi double brought in Finigan, Galvin scored on a wild pitch for the second run, and Schroeder's sacrifice fly brought in Corey.
Tufts answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a single by Max Freccia (Stamford, CT). Barry followed with a double to bring in Hauser and Barker later had an rbi groundout to plate Freccia.
Colby went up 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Finigan led off with a single, stole second base, and scored on Corey's single.
The Jumbos tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning. Nate Izzo (Saunderstown, RI) reached on a fielder's choice, went to second on a single by Barker, and scored on a double by Joe Harrington (Burke, VA). Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) had an rbi groundout to bring in Barker.
In the ninth, Corey singled to lead off and moved to second on a sacrifice by Thomas Forese. Nils Carlson, who was a pinch-hitter, singled to left field and Corey came around to score on an error by the outfielder.
Mark Nelson earned the victory after allowing just two hits, striking out four, and walking none in the final three innings for Colby. Scott Goldberg had worked the first six innings and had three strikeouts and no walks.
In the second game, Greg Ladd picked up the victory in relief after Brady Hesslein had allowed just two earned runs in 7.2 innings of work. No Colby pitcher gave up a walk in the two games.
Colin Cummings had a one-out single in the ninth and moved to second on a single by Galvin. Finigan moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored the game-winning run when Corey beat the throw to first on a double play attempt by Tufts.
Tufts took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Bryan Egan (Watervliet, NY) reached after being hit by a pitch and then took second on a wild pitch. Nick Cutsump (White Plains, NY) drove in Egan with a single and then stole second base. James Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) followed with a single to drive in Cutsumpas.
Nathan Ellis had a one-out walk for Colby in the bottom of the fourth, stole second base, and scored on a double by Finigan. The Mules tied the game at 2-2 with a lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Finigan doubled to lead off and was pinch-run for by Cummings. Corey had a one-out single to bring in the tying run.
While Colby had just five hits in the second game, Cutsumpas led Tufts with three hits while Egan and Staniewicz each had two.
