Johnson and Ajayi Power Tufts Men's Track & Field to Victory at Fitchburg State Spring Meet

Senior Vinnie Lee took fourth place in the 100 meters

FITCHBURG - The Jumbo men's track & field team tallied 18 top-five finishes to easily win the Eric Loeschner Memorial Meet at Fitchburg State University on Saturday.

Originally slated to compete at MIT, the squad had to change plans in light of the events in the Boston area this week. The Jumbos handled the schedule change well, as they scored 167 points to emerge victorious in the field of 24 teams. Worcestor State and Bridgewater State rounded out the top three with 100.5 and 94 points respectively.

Tufts' only event victory of the day came in the javelin, as junior Matt Johnson's (Hanover, MA) distance of 182'8" (55.69m) was the best of the field.

Senior tri-captain Curtis Yancy (St. Louis, MO) fared well in two throwing events for the Jumbos, as he took second in the hammer (168'7" / 51.38m) and third in the discuss (142'6" / 43.44m).

Sophomore Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) backed Yancy in the discus, placing fourth with a toss of 135'2" (41.21m), while senior Andre Figueroa (Bronx, NY) took fourth in the hammer with his mark of 164'6" (50.14m).

Away from the throws circle, senior Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) scored 16 points in jumping events, as he took second in the triple jump (45'10 ¾" / 13.99m) and second in the long jump (22'4 ½" / 6.82m). Freshman Bryson Hoover-Hankerson (Owings Mills, MD) was right behind in third with his leap of 21'2 ½" (6.46m).

On the track, sophomores Joe St. Pierre (Concord, NH) and Marshall Pagano (Niskayuna, NY) notched runner-up finishes in their respective events. St. Pierre clocked a time of 4:05.16 in the 1,500, while Pagano recorded a new personal-best of 9:44.67 in the steeplechase.

In the shorter events, freshman Alex Apostolides (Athens, Greece) notched a season-best time of 1:59.11 in the 800 to finish fourth, while senior Vinnie Lee (Walpole, MA) took fifth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.39.

Coach Ethan Barron's squad will look to ride the momentum from Saturday's convincing victory into the NESCAC Championship on their home track next weekend.
