MEDFORD - Salem State freshman lefty Sean Buckland (Lynn, MA) pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the Vikings to a 2-0 victory at Tufts in non-conference college baseball action Monday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Buckland no-hit Tufts for 4.2 innings until sophomore RF James Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) had the first Tufts hit with a single to left. The only other Tufts hit came in the sixth when sophomore CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) singled to right.
Though he hit four Tufts batters with pitches, Buckland allowed only two Jumbos to get into scoring position. No Jumbo touched third during the game. Buckland did not walk a batter and struck out five while improving to 2-1 on the season.
Jumbo sophomore pitcher Willie Archibald (Milton, MA) had a fine start as well. He allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts in seven innings. He fell to 2-1 with the loss.
Salem scored its unearned run in the third when junior CF Ethan Trowt (Beverly, MA) reached on an error to lead off. After he was sacrificed to second, he scored on a single by senior RF Steve Buitkus (Reading, MA).
Buckland looked to be tiring in the sixth when he allowed McDavitt's single and then hit Tufts sophomore 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) with a pitch. However, he got out of the inning on a 6-4-3 double play.
The Vikings then added an insurance run in the seventh. Junior DH Brett Cahill (Gloucester, MA) led off with a single to left. Junior 1B Matt Burgess (Kingston, MA) followed with a double to left. With runners on second and third, freshman 3B Richard Fecteau (Newbury, MA) got the run home with a ground ball to the right side.
Buckland cruised through the late innings, retiring the final 10 batters that he faced.
Buitkus went 2 for 3 atop the Salem order and drove in a run. Cahill and Burgess both went 2 for 4 as the Vikings finished with nine hits.
Tufts (19-10) plays an important NESCAC East Division three-game series at Huskins this weekend against Bowdoin. Game one is on Friday at 3 pm. Salem State returns to action tomorrow with a MASCAC double-header at home against Framingham State. The start time is 2 pm.
