Freccia Leads Jumbo Baseball to Crucial 11-7 NESCAC East Victory Over Bowdoin

MEDFORD - Junior DH Max Freccia (Stamford, CT) went 3 for 4 with four rbis, including a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning, as the Tufts baseball team won 11-7 over Bowdoin in NESCAC East action at Huskins Field Friday.

The Jumbos entered their three-game weekend series against the Polar Bears needing to win each game in order to qualify for the upcoming NESCAC Championship tournament. The teams will play a double-header beginnig at noon tomorrow.

Tufts had 16 hits in the game and scored runs in each of the first five innings. Bowdoin matched the Jumbos offensively early on, until freshman pitcher Andrew David (Pacific, MO) entered for Tufts in the fourth. He shut down Bowdoin with 5.2 innings of four-hit, no-run relief to earn his fifth victory.

Sophomore 3B Wade Hauser's (Palo Alto, CA) two-run home run in the bottom of the first put Tufts up 2-0. Bowdoin retaliated with five runs in the top of the second, including a two-run single by junior CF Kyle LeBlanc (Newburyport, MA).

Tufts surged to a 6-5 lead by scoring twice in both the second and third innings. Freccia knocked in two with a single up the middle in the second, then senior SS Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) had a two-run single in the third.

LeBlanc gave the lead back to Bowdoin in the top of the fourth, 7-6, with a two-run home run. The Jumbos tied it at 7-7 in the bottom of the inning after a lead-off double by Hauser and an rbi single from freshman 1B Mike Barry (Sudbury, MA).

A Bowdoin error on a play that would have ended the inning led to Freccia's two-run single in the fifth that gave Tufts a 9-7 lead. With David keeping the Polar Bears off the scoreboard, Tufts padded its margin in the seventh when sophomore CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA0 and Hauser hit one-out singles and scored on a hit-by-pitch and a fielder's choice, respectively.

Tufts stopped a three-game slide and earned their 20th win of the season (20-10 / 6-4 NESCAC East). The top five batters in the Jumbo order combined to go 13 for 23 with 10 rbis and eight runs scored. Staniewicz was  2 for 5 with two rbis and two runs, McDavitt finished 3 for 5 with three runs, Hauser went 3 for 4 with three runs and two rbis, and Barry had a 2 for 4 game with two rbis.

Bowdoin's school-record 12-game winning streak ended. They dropped to 21-10 overall and 7-3 in the division. LeBlanc led the Polar Bears at 3 for 4 with four rbis and two runs. Senior 1B Luke Regan (West Roxbury, MA) was 2 for 4 with a run. Junior John Lefeber (Branford, CT), one of five Bowdoin pitchers in the game, took the loss allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned) in three innings.
