Baseball Scores in Bottom of the Ninth in Second Game to Sweep Double-header over Hamilton

Freshman Mike Barry's walk won game two for Tufts

MEDFORD - Freshman DH Mike Barry (Sudbury, MA) worked a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Tufts baseball team a 7-6 win in the second game and a sweep of a double-header against Hamilton College on Saturday at Huskins Field. Tufts won the seven-inning first game 13-6.

Barry's walk capped the eventful late innings in game two. Trailing 6-2, the visiting Continentals scored once in the eighth and three times in the ninth to tie the game at 6-6. Sophomore CF Joe Jensen (West Windsor, NJ) scored in both innings and had back-to-back doubles with senior Gabe Klein (Mamaroneck, NY) to help tie it in the ninth.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, a double error by Hamilton put runners on first and third. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Continental junior submarine pitcher Tommy Moriarty (Newton, MA) walked Barry to give Tufts the win.

The Continentals made five errors in the second game leading to five unearned runs. The Jumbos took a 2-0 lead in the third with senior 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) knocking in a run and scoring in the inning. Klein doubled and scored on a wild pitch and an error closing the gap to 2-1 in the fourth.

A two-run single by Jumbo sophomore RF James Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) highlighted a three-run fifth for Tufts as they took a 5-1 lead. In the sixth, sophomore Ben Goffin (Falmouth, ME) had a pinch-hit rbi single for Hamilton and Tufts scored without a hit making it 6-2.

Tufts sophomore Kyle Slinger (Danville, CA) had worked a solid seven innings, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out six. Hauser (2 for 5, two runs, rbi) and junior LF Nate Izzo at 2 for 5 with two rbi and a run led the Jumbos offfensively.

Jensen was 3 for 5 with two runs and an rbi at the top of the Hamilton order. Klein finished 2 for 3 with two runs and an rbi. Sophomore Alex Pachella (Wayne, PA) started and went six, giving up six hits and six runs (two earned) with five K's.

In game one, Tufts scored 11 runs in the first three innings. They had 13 hits in their first 20 at bats. Hauser singled home a run and scored in the three-run first. Sophomore DH Bryan Egan's (Watervliet, NY) two-run single was part of a six-run second, and he then hit a two-run double in the third.

The Continentals had a big inning of their own, plating six in the sixth. Klein doubled home a run and scored in the inning, while seniors Lukas Bridenbeck (East Greenbush, NY) and Sam Fuentes (Wilton, CT) both had run-scoring singles and also scored during the frame.

Tufts (11-7) finished with 17 hits as seven batters had multiples. Sophomore CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an rbi. Egan went 3 for 4 with four rbi and a run. Junior tri-captain Christian Sbily (Gaithersburg, MD) got the win (2-2) for Tufts, pitching 5.1 innings allowing six hits and four runs with six strikeouts.

For Hamilton (7-11) in the first game, freshman Brian Ferrell (Wilmington, NC) was 3 for 3 with a run and an rbi, and Fuentes finished 2 for 4 with a run and an rbi. Senior Steve Wright (Cortland, NY) took the pitching loss (1-1) for the Continentals.

The teams will wrap up their weekend series with a pair of seven-inning games tomorrow at Huskins starting at noon.
