LOWELL - The Jumbo men's track & field team notched two wins and 11 top-five finishes at the George Davis Invitational at UMass Lowell on Saturday.
The un-scored meet provided athletes an opportunity to notch stellar early-season performances against stiff competition from all divisions.
Senior tri-captain Brad Nakanishi (Scarborough, ME) took a huge step in the right direction by clearing 14'11" (4.55m) to earn the victory in the pole vault.
The Jumbos also fared very well in throwing events. Sophomore Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) launched the shot put 48'11 ½" (14.92m) to emerge victorious. In the javelin, junior Matt Johnson (Hanover, MA) took second with a distance of 175'8" (53.55m).
Senior tri-captain Curtis Yancy (St. Louis, MO) placed third in the discus with a heave of 141'0" (42.98m) and threw the hammer 168'10" (51.46m) for fourth.
His classmate Gbola Ajayi (Lagos, Nigeria) leaped 21'5 ¼" (6.53m) in the long jump to take fifth.
On the track, senior Sam Haney (Essex, CT) notched a top-three finish in the 5,000 with a time of 15:16.90. He was backed by sophomore Marshall Pagano (Niskayuna, NY), who placed fifth in a time of 15:29.01.
Also placing fifth were junior Liam Cassidy (Brunswick, ME) and senior Vinnie Lee (Walpole, MA). Cassidy clocked a time of 9:30.25 in the two-mile, while Lee ran a time of 23.33 in the 200.
In the 100 meter dash, junior Graham Beutler (Weston, CT) clocked a time of 11.28 to finish fourth.
These athletes will hope to improve on these solid early-season performances as the season progresses.
Next weekend, coach Ethan Barron's team will travel to Brown University to compete in the Springtime Invitational.
