MEDFORD - Junior Dean Lambert (Cross River, NJ) and freshman Andrew David (Pacific, MO) were both superb while pitching complete-game victories for the Tufts baseball team against Hamilton College on Sunday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Lambert threw a three-hit shutout in game one's 6-0 victory. David allowed three hits and one run in a 7-1 outcome in the nightcap. Both games were seven innings. With the two wins, Tufts (13-7) also swept the weekend four-game series against the Continentals (7-13).
Lambert did not allow a hit until the fourth inning of the first game, when Hamilton junior 3B Colin Henneberger (Glen Head, NY) singled with one out. He would be erased on a double-play. The Continentals also had lead off singles by sophomore CF Jim Jensen (West Windsor, NJ) in the sixth and by Hennegerger in the seventh. Lambert struck out six and walked two while earning his first victory.
The Jumbos scored three runs in both the second and third innings of game one. They did so with just one hit in the second. Two runs came home when sophomore CF Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA) and sophomore 3B Wade Hauser (Palo Alto, CA) were hit by pitches in back-to-back at bats. In the third, a two-run single by junior catcher Nick Cutsumpas (White Plains, NY) and an rbi single by senior SS Scott Staniewicz (Boca Raton, FL) provided the runs.
Tufts only had four hits in the game against Hamilton pitchers Mike Williams (Larchmont, NY) and Tommy Moriarty (Newton, MA). Cutsumpas had two of them. However, Williams walked four batters and hit three others.
Hamilton scored its lone run in the second game during the first inning off David to lead 1-0. Henneberger continued a good day with a one-out single. He scored on a single to right by senior RF Gabe Klein (Mamaroneck, NY). David would allow just one hit the rest of the way, another single by Klein in the fourth. The Tufts freshman struck out seven with no walks to even his record at 2-2.
Tufts scored six times in the bottom of the second. Sophomore catcher Nick Barker (Weymouth, MA) had a two-run single followed by another two-run single from McDavitt. Staniewicz, who was 3 for 4 with two runs in the second game, singled and scored in the sixth. Senior 1B Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) was 2 for 3 with a run for Tufts.
Continental freshman pitcher Cole Dreyfuss (New York, NY) allowed 10 hits and five earned runs in six innings while taking his first loss (3-1).
