BOSTON – Jim O'Connor scored the game-winning goal 2:36 into the overtime period to lift the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Tufts University Saturday evening at the 49th Annual Codfish Bowl, hosted by UMass Boston.
With the win, SNHU improves to 8-4-1 overall, while Tufts falls to 2-8-0. The Jumbos will play Suffolk in the Codfish consolation game on Sunday at 1 pm. The Rams lost 10-1 to host UMass Boston in Saturday's other first-round game. The Penmen return to action tomorrow when they play in the Codfish Bowl championship game against UMass Boston for a 4:00 puck-drop.
Four different Penmen notched goals in the win, while Joe Collins tallied two scores. Brian Ouellette tallied three assists to lead Tufts, while both Blake Edwards and Keith Campbell finished with a goal and an assist.
Kyle Gallegos scored just 26 seconds into the game to give Tufts a 1-0 lead. After John Humphrey evened the score at 1-1 at the 13:20 mark, Tyler Voigt netted a goal for the Jumbos with 1:12 remaining in the period for a 2-1 Tufts lead.
Tufts built a two-goal lead (3-1) in the second period after a Campbell power play goal, but Collins quickly answered three minutes later with his 13th tally on the season to cut the deficit to one. Classmate Jim Gabrione then contributed a goal of his own and the equalizer with just over five minutes to play in the period.
The Penmen took their first lead of the game halfway into the third when Collins scored his second goal on a power play. On the strength of three straight goals, SNHU held a 4-3 advantage over Tufts, but Edwards scored the game-tying goal for Tufts at 11:18 to eventually force overtime.
O'Connor notched the game-winner, and his third goal of the season from Anthony Laperriere more than halfway through the overtime period to give SNHU the win.
Tyler Holske saved 33 shots in goal for SNHU, while Ryan Kellenberger also turned away 33 for the Jumbos.
