NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Dakota Sikes Keilp knocked in her first goal of the season and junior Rachel Terveer added two of her own to help the #7 Tufts field hockey team earn a 4-1 win at Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos are now in fourth place in the NESCAC, tied with Williams and Trinity. The Bantams and the Jumbos will face off tomorrow.
Sikes Keilp helped the Jumbos gain the early lead just 12:54 into the first half when she scored with a shot that resulted from a penalty corner. The goal was the first of the season for the junior who led the team in scoring last year.
The score would remain 1-0 going into the half, but Terveer scored just over eight minutes into the second half with the assist coming from sophomore Dominique Zarrella to give the Jumbos the 2-0 advantage. About 15 minutes later Terveer knocked in her fourth goal of the season to give the Jumbos the 3-0 lead.
About ten minutes later the Jumbos took a 4-0 lead on an unassisted goal from first-year Mary Travers, bringing her season total up to four. The host Camels were able to sneak one past senior co-captain Bri Keenan to bring the score to 4-1 with just under two minutes left to play. The goal came from rookie Meghan Lembo, and she was assisted by junior Jillian Dahrooge.
The Jumbos had the advantage in shots on the day, 13-7, and penalty corners, 8-1. Keenan finished with five saves, while her Camel counterpart, sophomore Ryley van der Velde finished with seven saves.
Connecticut College moves to 4-6 overall this season with a 1-5 NESCAC mark. They will host Colby on Sunday with a 12:00 pm start time. With the win the Jumbos are now 8-2, with a 4-2 NESCAC mark. They will be back in action on Sunday when they visit Trinity for a 12:00 pm game.
