Big Third Period Powers Trinity Past Men's Hockey to Complete Opening Weekend

Box Score
Brian Ouellette opened up scoring for the Jumbos against Trinity with his first goal of the season

MALDEN – The Tufts men's hockey team played two great periods of hockey with #10 ranked Trinity on Saturday afternoon at the Valley Forum.  The Bantams pulled away in the third period and were able to earn the 7-2 win.

Trinity (2-0-0, 2-0-2) completes a 2-0 opening weekend as they topped Connecticut College on Saturday night, 7-2.  The Jumbos opened up their 2014-15 campaign on Saturday night, hosting Wesleyan who earned the 5-2 win.

Trinity opened up the scoring just under four minutes into the first period with a power play goal from sophomore Sean Orlando.  Jumbo sophomore Conal Lynch was sent to the box on a tripping penalty, and the Bantams and Orlando were able to capitalize on the advantage to take  the 1-0 lead.  Senior Jackson Brewer and sophomore T.J. Sherman had the assists.

Just over eight minutes later Bantam junior Michael Hawkrigg got put away for boarding and six seconds after that senior Paul Burns started serving time for slashing.  The five-on-three advantage allowed junior Brian Ouellette to net his first goal of the season, evening the score at one just over 13 minutes into the period.

Trinity would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, with the first even strength goal of the game with just under two minutes left in the period.  Sherman and sophomore Ethan Holdaway found junior Elie Vered who was able to get the puck past Jumbo sophomore goalie Mason Pulde, who was making his first collegiate start between the pipes.  The Jumbos outshot the Bantams in the first period, finishing with 14 shots on goal to the Bantams 12.

The Bantams came out of the first intermission on a roll, putting a lot of pressure on the Jumbo defense to start the second period.  Trinity would have three different five-on-four opportunities to start the second period, but the Jumbo defense was a force to be reckoned with, allowing the Bantams only one shot on goal during all three penalties and not allowing a single goal.

Just over fifteen minutes into the second frame, the Bantams proved they had a good penalty kill as well, not allowing Tufts to score on a five-on-three advantage for a little over a minute.  With just over thirty seconds remaining in the second period, it was sophomore Sean Kavanagh that provided the unassisted equalizer for the Jumbos, locking the score at two apiece heading into the second intermission.

The Bantams scored five unanswered goals in the third period to pull away from the Jumbos, earning the 7-2 win.  Freshman Tyler Whitney gave the Bantams a 3-2 advantage with a goal just over three minutes into the start of the third period off a pass from sophomore Ryan Cole.

The Bantams would then score three goals in just over two minutes.  Hawkrigg's slap shot while Trinity had a five-on-three advantage just a little over twelve minutes into the period was the first.  Just over a minute later Whitney struck for the second time in the period, with his third of the season, as Sherman picked up his third assist of the game.  Less than a minute later senior Paul Burns's slap shot got past Pulde, with seniors Liam McKillop and Conor Coveney getting credited for the assists.

With just under three minutes left on the clock, Brewer scored his first of the season, as the Bantams had a five-on-three advantage with Jumbos in the box for slashing and boarding.  Orlando and Hawkrigg picked up the assists.

Junior Nathaniel Heilbron finished with 26 saves for the Bantams in the net.  Pulde played the entire game between the pipes for the Jumbos, finishing with 37 saves.

The Bantams finished the contest with the advantage in shots on goal, 44-28 and were 3-for-8 on power play opportunities.  The Jumbos were 1-for-7 on the power play.  Seven Bantams were charged with penalties for a total of 14 minutes while the Jumbos racked up eight penalties, good for 16 minutes in the box.

The Bantams will be back in action next week as they host Amherst for a 7:30 pm contest on Friday and Hamilton for a 4:00 pm start time on Saturday.  The Jumbos (0-2-0, 0-2-0) take the ice again on Friday at Middlebury for a 7:00 pm puck drop and will then travel to Williams on Saturday for a 3:00 pm game.
