NEW LONDON, CT - The Connecticut College men's hockey team erupted with two goals in the opening 4:46 and went on to pull away for a 5-3 victory against Tufts University in front of 425 fans at Dayton Arena Saturday night.
It was the fourth win in the past five outings for the Camels, who improved to 7-12-1 with a mark of 6-8 in conference action. The Jumbos slipped to 3-17 with a record of 1-13 in the NESCAC.
JC Cangelosi sandwiched a pair of goals around an assist to lead the hosts offensively. Kevin Kelly chipped in with a goal and an assist for the winning side.
Connecticut College opened the scoring 4:06 into regulation. Joe Giordano collected a rebound from behind the cage and made a nifty looking wrap around move to put the Camels on top. Corey Wisnowski and Cangelosi assisted on the marker.
Just 40 seconds later, the Camels were on the board again. Kelly cycled the puck into the slot area and Penn Sednaoui extended the Camel advantage.
With 10:21 remaining in the frame, the Jumbos nearly got one back when junior Andrew White unloaded from the right circle with a slapper that was saved by Camels goalie Mike Petchonka.
The Camels added their third goal with 9:44 remaining. Kevin Reich led Cangelosi on a break and the junior forward broke free and fired one home into the upper right portion of the netting from the mid-slot area.
In the second period, the Jumbos cashed in on their power play with 6:07 remaining. White made a nice bid with a back-hander that was saved by Petchonka but junior Shawn Power collected the rebound and scored with the shot coming from the left circle.
But the Camels regained their three-goal advantage with 1:57 remaining. Kelly collected a loose puck in a scramble and stuffed one in to make it a 4-1 game in favor of the Camels.
Early in the third period, the Camels were assessed with a five-minute major. But the Jumbos could not take advantage and with 8:15 remaining, Cangelosi put in a short-handed marker to push the lead to 5-1. It was his second score of the night and team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Tufts scored twice in a 19 second span to close to 5-3. Tyler Voigt accounted for a power play goal with 1:20 remaining. Then, with 61 seconds left to play, Patrick Lackey potted his fourth goal of the season.
The Camels were able to hold on for the 5-3 victory. Ryan Kellenberger made one stop for the Jumbos. and Greg Jenkins finished with 19 saves in relief duty. Petchonka made 23 of his 40 saves in the third period of action.
The Jumbos held a 43-to-25 advantage on the shot chart.
