FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Tufts University had a 19-hit attack and senior tri-captain Christian Sbily hurled seven innings allowing just one run as the Jumbo baseball team stayed hot with a 14-1 win over Methodist on Wednesday.
Several Jumbos took part in the offensive fireworks. Connor McDavitt was 3 for 5 with a run and an rbi at the top of the order. Wade Hauser also had three hits to go with two rbis and a run. James Howard finished 3 for 4 with a run and an rbi. Oscar Kutch scored three runs out of the two-hole while recording two hits. Matt Moser went 2 for 5 with three runs and two rbis. Nick Cutsumpas had a 2 for 4 day with a team-high four rbis and two runs.
Tufts jumped on MU starter Daniel Royer, scoring three runs in the first inning as Royer lasted just 0.2 innings. Hauser singled home a run and scored as the Jumbos took a 3-0 lead in the first. A three-run Tufts third was highlighted by Cutsumpas' two-run double and Tufts led 6-0.
Moser had a two-out double and scored on a single by Howard to push the margin to 7-0 in the fourth. After Methodist scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth, Hauser doubled home the eighth Jumbo run in the fifth.
After plating a lone unearned in the seventh, the Jumbos capped the output with five final runs in the ninth. Moser hit a two-run single and Cutsumpas had a two-run triple to key the rally.
Sbily had worked out of a jam in the first, getting a 5-3 double play ball. MU scored its lone run of the game off him in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Cody Molosky singled and Matt Jack followed with a single of his own. With two men on, Lucas Scott singled to drive in Molosky and make it a 7-1 game at the time.
Steven Kirby was 2 for 4 with a stolen base to lead the Monarchs. Methodist used eight pitchers overall.
Freshman Charlie McQuinn pitched two no-hit innings to cap the rout for the Jumbos, striking out two.
