LYNCHBURG, VA - The Tufts University baseball team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday, 8-1, at Lynchburg College. Jay Kenyon went 3 for 5 with two runs and two rbis to lead the Hornets offensively, while Pat Harris got the pitching victory allowing one run in 6.1 innings.
Lynchburg (12-4) got right at it with three runs in the bottom of the first. Rob Tomasulo doubled in a run and Kenyon hit a two-run home run to left-center to extend the lead to 3-0.
Tufts got one back in the top of the second. Sophomore SS Matt Moser doubled to right-center with one out and scored went senior catcher Nick Cutsumpas singled.
The Jumbos (8-1) made five errors in the game, and one of them led to the fourth Lynchburg run in the third. Joe Tomasulo also singled in a run giving Lynchburg a 5-1 margin after three.
While Harris kept the Jumbos off the board, the Hornets added two more in the fifth. Run-scoring singles by Drew Taylor and Lincoln Evans made it 7-1.
A single by Joe Tomasulo and an eventual sacrifice fly by Joe Rogers brought the final Hornet run across in the bottom of the seventh.
Lynchburg finished with 13 hits as all nine batters had at least one. Seven scored runs and six had rbis. Joe Tomasulo adding three along with Kenyon. Harris allowed six hits while walking two and striking out two for Lynchburg. Zac Patrick had a strong relief stint, giving up no runs and no hits with four K's in 2.2 innings.
Junior pitcher Willie Archibald took the loss for Tufts, allowing 12 hits and seven runs (six earned) with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings.
