HAMPTON, VA - A three-run fourth in game one and a two-run fourth in game two proved to be the deciding factors as Tufts Baseball swept a doubleheader from the Apprentice School 4-2 and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, the Builders scored a run in the bottom of the first as Brock Harris started the inning with a double and scored on a one-out single from Chris Aldridge. Apprentice School scratched an unearned run in the bottom of the second as Christian Burton reached on an error and advanced to second on a single from Mark Labrador. A slow roller from Lee Rossi allowed Burton to beat an attempted force out to load the bases. After a pair of strikeouts, Harris drew a bases loaded walk to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
The Jumbos took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth as Wade Hauser started with a triple and scored on a Max Freccia single. Mike Barry reached on an error which was followed by Nick Barker being hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sacrifice fly from Matt Moser brought in Freccia to tie the game. James Howard followed with a single to load the bases before a walk to Connor McDavitt brought in Barry for the 3-2 lead.
Tufts added another run in the fifth as Hauser started being hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice groundout from Freccia. He stole third and an errant throw allowed Hauser to take home for the 4-2 lead.
Each team only had five hits in the pitchers duel between Kyle Slinger and Chris Perry. Slinger threw six innings and struck out three for the Jumbos to earn his third win. Moser pitched the seventh to earn his first save. Perry went the distance walking two and striking out two to see his record drop to 3-2. Labrador was the only player on either team to have a multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
In game two, Tufts jumped on the board in the top of the first as Barker singled with one out and Hauser followed with a double to centerfield. He was tagged out trying to stretch it into a triple.
In the bottom of the first, the Builders scored two runs as with one out Trevin Wilson walked and Chris Aldridge followed with a single to put runners on the corners. After a walk to Brian Belvin, Burton drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Wilson to tie the game. Labrador followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Aldridge for the 2-1 lead.
The fourth inning struck again on the Builders as Tufts plated a pair of unearned runs. Bryan Egan reached on a walk and advanced as Moser reached on an error. Following a sacrifice bunt to put the runners at second and third, Nick Cutsumpas reached on a fielder's choice as the throw to get Egan at the plate sailed wide. Tim Mitropoulos followed with a slow roller that Moser beat on an attempted play at the plate to give the Jumbos a 3-2 lead.
Tom Ryan and Speros Varinos combined on the four-hitter for Tufts as they held the Builders to only a sixth inning single from Belvin and a seventh inning single from Lee Rossi after the two-run first. Barker and Hauser had two hits each for the Jumbos who continued their hot start to the season as they're now 10-1 on the year.
Taylor Gomer was the tough-luck loser throwing a complete game five-hitter and striking out five as his record dropped to 4-2.
