SOMERVILLE - Three throwers combined to score 33 of Tufts' 79 points to propel the Jumbos to second in the Snowflake Classic at Dussault Track on Saturday.
Only conference-rival Bates outscored Tufts with 108 points. Worcester State (70), Bridgewater State (65) and Vermont (54) rounded out the top-five in the 27-team field.
Sophomore Atticus Swett (Bow, NH) scored 22 points in the circle for the Jumbos. He won the discus with a heave of 134' 1" (40.87m), placed second in the shot put with a distance of 45' 5" (13.84m) and launched the hammer 130' 11" (39.90m) to take fifth. Junior Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) bested Swett in the hammer with his toss of 160' 4" (48.88m), good enough for second.
In the javelin, freshman Nick Usoff (Acton, MA) placed in the top-five with a throw of 154' 10" (47.20m). He was also in action on the track, as he earned another fifth-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.14. Classmate Henry Zhou (Yifeng, China) clocked a 59.37 for seventh.
The Jumbos' only victory on the track came from sophomore Veer Bhalla (West Windsor, NJ), as he notched a time of 1:55.31 to best the field in the 800. Classmate Alex Apostolides (Athens, Greece) took seventh in a time of 1:59.50.
In the 10,000, senior Andrew Shapero (Laguna Beach, CA) was the runner-up with a time of 31:55.71. Junior Greg Hardy (Barnstable, MA) clocked in at 32:28.56 for sixth.
Junior Joe Poupard (Northbrook, IL) represented the Jumbos in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, placing third with a time of 10:29.19.
Coach Ethan Barron's team will look to improve on these marks as the outdoor season progresses. Most of the squad will compete in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at American International College on Saturday, while a small contingent of mid-distance runners will head south to Princeton's Sam Howell Invitational on Friday.
