LOWELL - The Jumbo men's track and field team showcased their depth and talent across all event groups in the un-scored George Davis Invitational at UMass Lowell on Saturday.
With teams from all divisions competing, it was a good opportunity for Tufts athletes to see how they stacked up against some solid competition.
Sophomore Mitchell Stallman (Amherst, NH) notched the only victory of the day for the Jumbos, as he cleared 13' 1 ½" (4.00m) in the pole vault. He was backed by senior David Sutherland (Queenstown, MD) in second with his clearance of 12' 7 ½" (3.85m).
In the circle, Brian Williamson (Prairie Village, KS) took third in the shot put with a heave of 50' 0" (15.24m), while his distance of 161' 4" (49.18m) was also good enough for third in the hammer.
On the runway, senior Graham Beutler (Weston, CT), an All-American in the 400 meters, tried his hand at the triple jump and placed third with a leap of 43' 3 ¼" (13.19m). Sophomore Mitch Black (Brunswick, ME) recorded a mark of 41' 9 ¼" (12.73m) to place fourth.
His classmate Francis Goins (Shaker Heights, OH) was the runner-up in the 200 with his time of 23.30. Freshman Luke O' Connor (Chicago, IL) was also a runner-up, as he clocked a time of 15:12.75 in the 5,000. Senior Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) and freshman Tim Nichols (Lima, OH) placed third and fourth with times of 15:15.33 and 15:15.66 respectively.
In the 800, senior Jamie Norton (Groton, MA) posted a time of 1:56.82 for fourth place.
Coach Ethan Barron's team has one more week to tune up before the NESCAC Championship on April 26. Most of the squad will compete in the Sean Collier Invitational at MIT on Saturday, while some team members will suit up in the Holy Cross Heptathlon on Wednesday and Thursday or the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton on Friday.
