SALEM - Max Freccia (Stamford, CT) banged out five hits and drove in five runs to propel the Jumbos of Tufts University past the Salem State Vikings by a score of 17-7, on Monday at Central Campus Field.
Tufts, which is ranked second in New England, improves to 20-2 on the year. The Vikings, who entered the NEIBA poll this week at No. 7, slip to 19-11.
Freccia started the scoring, plating Connor McDavitt (Holden, MA), who had walked with an rbi single to put the Jumbos on the board in the first inning. In the bottom of the inning Matt Burgess (Kingston, MA) stroked a run-scoring single to even things up at 1-1.
In the second, the Jumbos opened the game up off Salem State starter Matt Burnham (Lynn, MA). Three straight singles and a walk to Tom Petry (Worcester, MA) scored the first run. An rbi groundout by McDavitt, and singles by James Howard (Rockville Centre, NY) and Freccia all produced runs to increase Tufts' lead to 5-1.
Left fielder Cody McCallum (Rutherford, NJ) kept Salem State off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning when he held onto the ball while making a running catch into the fence with a man on.
Ed Deren (Westford, MA) came on to pitch in the third inning for the Vikings. Deren retired the side in the third, but gave up five more runs to Tufts in the fourth as the Jumbos built a commanding 10-1 lead. The wind, which aided hits by both sides, helped Tufts load the bases to start the inning. A walk led to the first run and Freccia followed with a two-run, ground-rule double to deep left center. Mike Barry (Sudbury, MA) and Matt Moser (Great Falls, VA), added sacrifice flies to cap the scoring.
Ethan Trowt (Beverly, MA) knocked in a run for Salem State in the fourth as Brendan DeLiere (Lynn, MA) replaced Deren. Petry crossed home in the fifth for Tufts, which added four more runs in the sixth. A passed ball along with rbis from Howard, Hauser, and Feccia added to the lead.
The Vikings scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth off Jumbos' starter Will Archibald (Milton, MA). Alex Toomey (Beverly, MA) walked with the bases loaded and Richard Fecteau (Newbury, MA) followed with a bases clearing double that made the score 15-6.
Charlie McQuinn (Moorpark, CA) came on in relief for the Jumbos, while Ben Kendrew (Lynnfield, MA) entered for for the Vikings. Moser added two-run double in the eighth while Salem State added a run to make the final 17-7.
Matt Turmenne (Lynn, MA) pitched the ninth or Salem State, which had their 12-game winning streak snapped. Burnham (2-4) went two innings, yielding six hits and five runs for Salem State.
Archibald (2-1) pitched six innings for Tufts to pick up the win after allowing nine hits, six runs, with four strikeouts, and two walks.
