SOMERVILLE - Junior Allan Yau (Andover, MA) led a contingent of Tufts decathletes in the Tufts Last Second Decathlon at Ellis Oval on Thursday and Friday.
Due to the cancellation of the originally-scheduled Holy Cross Decathlon, the Jumbos got an extra opportunity to compete on their home turf.
Yau led the way, finishing second in the nine-man field. His score of 5,177 beat his previous personal-best by nearly 400 points. Yau placed in the top-three in six of the ten events and came out on top in the pole vault with his clearance of 10' 10" (3.30m). The 100-meter dash was his highest-scoring event, as his time of 11.67 garnered 717 points.
Sophomore Alex Karys (Newton, MA) placed fourth with a personal-best score of 5,140. The 100-meter dash was also his best event, as his time of 11.97 was good enough for 657 points. The long jump earned him 650 points, as he recorded a distance of 20' 7 ¾" (6.29m). In the discus, Karys was the class of the field. His launch of 105' 2" (32.06m) was the best of the day and good for 505 points.
Freshman Dan Camilletti (Oakville, ON) was right behind Karys in fifth with a total of 4,758 points. In his first attempt at the event, he fared the best in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 16.96 and earning 628 points. His second-highest total of 612 came in the 100-meter dash, as he notched a time of 12.20. He also broke the 600-point mark in the 400 meters with a time of 54.85.
Sophomore Bryson Hoover Hankerson (Owings Mills, MD), who typically competes in the sprints and horizontal jumps, gave the decathlon a try this week. He was only able to register a score in the 100-meter dash. His time of 11.75 earned 701 points.
Adrian Samsel of MIT tallied 6,092 points to easily win the overall competition.
These Tufts athletes will be back in action next Saturday as they rejoin the rest of the squad to compete in the NESCAC Championship at Colby.
