Tufts Baseball Sweeps Weekend Series From Colby After Winning Saturday's Double-header

Box Score
Bryan Egan's double started the winning rally in game two

MEDFORD - A pair of walk-off wins on Saturday gave the #15 Tufts baseball team double-header and weekend series sweeps over Colby College at Huskins Field. Tufts won 3-2 in the 10th inning of game one and took a 1-0 victory in the bottom of the seventh in game two.

Sophomore Matt Moser had the game-winning hit, was the winning pitcher and also homered in game one. Senior co-captain Christian Sbily three a seven-inning, three-hit shutout for the Jumbos in the nightcap.

Tufts is now 23-2 overall and 6-1 in the NESCAC East Division. Colby, which got a stand-out pitching performance from junior Greg Ladd in game two, drops to 13-9 and 4-5 in the NESCAC East.

Game one, scheduled for seven innings, was tied 2-2 at that point. In the bottom of the 10th, Tufts senior 2B Tim Mitropolous singled with two outs. He took second on a catcher's interference call and came around to score the game-winning run on Moser's single to left-center.

On the mound, Moser had entered the game with one out in the sixth after Colby had tied the score against Jumbo freshman starter Tim Superko. Moser would go 4.2 innings allowing just one hit and no runs with six strikeouts and no walks.

Moser's home run to lead off the fourth had given Tufts a 2-1 lead. The Jumbos scored an unearned run in the third to initially lead 1-0. Junior James Howard singled with two outs, moved to third on a single by junior 3B Wade Hauser and scored on a Colby error.

The Mules tied the game twice, first at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Senior RF Colin Cummings led off with a single and senior 3B Kevin Galvin walked. After senior DH Alec Finigan bunted them over, sophomore 1B Daniel Csaplar singled Cummings home. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Finigan led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. He went to third on junior LF Jason Buco's single and scored on a double by junior pinch-hitter Nils Carlson.

Howard finished game one 3 for 5 with a run for Tufts, while Moser went 2 for 5 with two rbis and a run.

Buco had two of Colby's seven hits in the opener. Sophomore Soren Hanson started and went eight innings allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) with 12 K's. Senior Dakota Rabbitt took the loss in his 1.2 innings of relief.

Game two was a pitcher's duel between Sbily and Ladd. Sbily struck out two and walked one while allowing two Colby runners into scoring position. The Jumbos put three runners into scoring position in six innings against Ladd, including a pair of doubles by Howard.

In the seventh, junior DH Bryan Egan, who had been cut down at the plate trying to score on a single in the fifth, led off with a double down the left field line. With pinch runner Harry Brown in the game, sophomore LF Cody McCallum attempted a sacrifice bunt. Ladd fielded the ball, but his throw to third hit Brown and rolled well into foul territory allowing the winning run to score.

Egan had a 3 for 3 game for Tufts, while Howard and junior CF Connor McDavitt were both 2 for 3.

Ladd gave up eight hits and no earned runs in six innings without a strikeout.
