SPRINGFIELD - Sophomore Veer Bhalla ran fourth in the 400 meters and led off for the runner-up 4x400-meter relay as the Tufts men's outdoor track & field team placed ninth at the 2014 New England Division III Championships at Springfield College Friday and Saturday.
Bhalla's 49.55 time scored five fourh-place points in the 400. In the 4x4, he fronted a group including Alex Kasemir, Blake Coolidge and Woody Butler that ran 3:19.74. Southern Maine won the race in 3:17.02.
Junior Atticus Swett also scored in a pair of events for the Jumbos. He was sixth in the discus throwing, spinning it 144-feet flat (43.89m), and placed seventh for the javelin throw (161'1" / 49.10m). Freshman Nick Usoff was ahead of him in sixth place for the javelin, launching it 163'0" (49.69m).
Sophomore Mitchell Black, one of the nation's best in the 800, ran the 1,500 and placed fourth with a 3:56.24 finish. Fellow conference champion Brian Williamson was entered in only the hammer throw this weekend and placed sixth with a 160'0" (48.78m) best.
Senior Brian McLaughlin contributed three sixth-place points with his 15:19.35 time in the 5,000 meters.
MIT won the meet going away, their 159.83 points more than twice as many as second-place Bates (79.33). The Jumbos scored 30 points.
