Simko Wins Twice as Men's Swimming and Diving Tops Wesleyan Sunday Afternoon

Zachary Wallace won the 200 backstroke against Wesleyan on Sunday

MEDFORD – The Tufts men's swimming and diving team had eight different Jumbos win events as the Jumbos topped NESCAC rival Wesleyan, 174-108, at the Hamilton Pool on Sunday afternoon.  The meet was one of two for the Jumbos at home this weekend, as they took on MIT on Saturday.

Junior Cam Simko won the 1000 yard freestyle and the 50 yard freestyle, and sophomore Jasper Du won the 200 yard breaststroke and swam on the winning team in the 200 yard medley relay to help the Jumbos earn the win.

Simko's time of 10:06.47 in the 1000 yard freestyle was over ten seconds under the second place finisher.  In the 50 freestyle, Simko won a race to the wall against freshman James McElduff, finishing in 23.14 while McElduff touched in 23.17.  Jumbos finished in the first three positions in both the 1000 freestyle and the 50 freestyle.

Du touched the wall in 2:17.05 in the 200 breaststroke, also swimming on the winning 200 yard medley relay team.  Also on that winning team was junior Michael Winget and fresmen Panos Skoufalos and Lorenzo Lau, finishing in 1:38.60, just .14 before the team of sophomore William Metcalfe and freshmen Zachary Wallace, Morgan Ciliv and McEdluff, which finished in second place with a time of 1:38.74.

Cilliv also won for the Jumbos, taking home first place in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.06.  Winget won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 54.65.  Sophomore Luca Guadagno won the 100 yard freestyle in 50.78, just ahead of freshman Michael Brienza who finished in 50.81.  In the 200 yard backstroke, rookie Zachary Wallace finished in first place (2:00.75), just ahead of classmate Lorenzo Lau (2:03.82).  Junior Anthony Debenedetto added to the wins with a win of his own in the 200 yard freestyle, finishing in 1:46.88, with McElduff behind him finishing in 1:50.03.

Sophomore Matt Rohrer won off both the one and three meter boards.  In the one-meter competition he easily topped Wesleyan freshman Brandon Pearson, 277.20 to 258.37.  The three meter win came by an even bigger margin as Rohrer's score of 322.96 was over 25 points more than Pearson's 296.10.

The men will wrap up their home stand with a Tuesday meet against Boston College at 6:00 pm.
